Guide

Is your switchboard ready for an EV charger, heat pump or battery?

More homes are going electric, and the switchboard is where it all comes together. Here is how to tell whether yours can cope before you buy anything.

Signs your board is not ready

These are the common giveaways that an upgrade is needed.

  • Ceramic fuses or rewireable fuse holders
  • No safety switches (RCDs)
  • No spare space for new circuits
  • Warm, discoloured or crackling components
  • Breakers tripping when several things are on at once

Why it matters

EV chargers, heat pumps and batteries draw heavy, sustained loads. An old board that handled lights and a kettle may not be safe under that load, and may not have the protection modern circuits require.

What to do first

Have the board assessed before you buy the equipment. Aaron will check capacity, protection and space, and tell you honestly whether an upgrade is needed.

Bundle jobs to save

If you plan an EV charger and air-con in the same year, a single switchboard upgrade that covers both is usually cheaper than doing it in stages.
